Mastic is the name given to the natural resin obtained from the branches and trunk of the mastic tree. Although found in various regions of the world, the variety produced in Chios, the masticatory rope, is unique and cannot be produced anywhere else in the world. It has a slightly bitter taste, which, however, after being chewed, releases a coolness and freshness reminiscent of pine or cypress.

It is used in many sweets, such as in the bun, in pastries, sweets, cakes, king pie, jams, ice creams, chocolates, in mastic liqueur, etc. It is also added to oral hygiene products, cosmetics, soaps, etc. But we must be sparing with its use, as an overdose gives a bitter taste.

Mastic also has many different medicinal uses. It is an excellent medicine for stomach problems, for the treatment of ulcers, to treat diarrhoea, it is used as an expectorant and antitussive, it can fight many pathogenic bacteria, therefore it has an antibacterial and antioxidant effect, it has a therapeutic effect against caries, it has a protective effect on heart and blood vessels and helps to regenerate the skin.

To use it, crush it with a little sugar in a blender or mortar for sweet recipes, with a little salt for savory recipes. For gastrointestinal problems, put 2-3 pieces of mastic in a bottle of water and the next day drink the water during the day and chew the pieces of mastic if you want.
