Rosehips are naturally packed with vitamin C. They are the pseudo-fruits of the rosehip plant – and they're edible! They have been traditionally used for their medicinal properties and are heavily researched today.

Thanks to the presence of ellagic acid, lycopene and phenols, wild rose berries offer many benefits and boost your health in several ways.

The active components of rosehip reduce the growth and migration of breast cancer cells. The highest concentrations of rosehip extract reduced breast cancer cell migration by 45 percent. The active ingredients in rosehip also prevent the growth of cancer in the brain, a place where breast cancer cells tend to spread. Rosehip could be an active ingredient in functional diets that can help prevent colon cancer. The fruit also has an anti-inflammatory effect, which contributes to its anti-cancer-preventive properties.

Rosehips also contain certain bioactive compounds such as phenols, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), beta-carotene, tannins and pectins – which help to limit oxidative stress, which can otherwise lead to cancer. An important flavonoid in rosehip possesses commendable anti-inflammatory activity.

Although rosehip extract is safe, one thing should be kept in mind – patients taking rosehip along with certain medications should exercise extra caution. This is because rosehip can interact with some medications.

Rose hip extract was also found to prevent epithelitis, which could be caused by radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer. The fruit has also been observed to stop and even reverse the growth of certain cancers.

Rosehips, surprisingly, also contain lycopene (the compound that gives them their red color). Lycopene is popular for its anti-cancer activity. It stimulates communication between cells, the damage of which leads to the development of cancerous tumors.

Regular intake of rosehip extract has been linked to lower cholesterol levels. The fruit is particularly effective in obese patients – patients who consumed rosehip tea daily for six weeks saw a significant reduction in total blood cholesterol levels of up to 5 percent.

Wild rose is so full of vitamin C that the nutrient deserves a special mention. By the way, did you know that the fruit contains 60 times the vitamin C found in an orange? One of the most important benefits of vitamin C is the possible stimulation of collagen production in the body. Collagen is a protein that forms the connective tissue in the body.

Vitamin C also treats inflammation and improves immunity. Prevents scurvy, a disease that can cause muscle weakness, joint pain, rashes and tooth loss.

Rosehip also contains the fatty acid GOPO, which, according to experts, is the plant-based version of fish oil. And GOPO could be one of the factors contributing to the fruit's anti-arthritic properties.

Rosehip extract pills have been found to reduce arthritic pain by up to 90 percent. Another important feature of rosehips (in terms of treating arthritic symptoms) is that they do not have ulcerogenic effects like some other drugs. Some studies suggest that regular intake of 40 grams of rosehip powder can lower blood sugar levels and help treat diabetes.

Rosehip tea, when brewed, can enhance blood circulation. Rosehip can also be used to treat kidney disorders.
