Dittany (Erontas)

Dittany is a plant native to Crete. It is grey-green with fluffy leaves, bitter in taste and used since ancient times for its medicinal properties. Because it only grows in high, mountainous places, harvesting it is quite difficult. Dittany has many medicinal properties and is a versatile herb. It is a body tonic and stimulates the digestive system, also having an antispasmodic effect. It has analgesic effects, either in the digestive system, or in cases of headaches and neuralgia. Due to its bitter nature, it also acts as an anti-diabetic and is rumored to have aphrodisiac properties (hence the name Erontas). It is antioxidant and antimicrobial.

To prepare an infusion of dittany, put a teaspoon of the dried herb in a glass of boiling water and leave for 10 minutes.
