Fasting superfoods that are a tasty treat

The 40-day fast leading up to Holy Week is not only a religious custom for anyone who wishes to follow it.

Abstaining from animal products is also an opportunity for detoxification, weight loss, while at the same time it can offer multiple health benefits. But how will this be done? By adding fasting superfoods to the daily diet that, in addition to their high nutritional value, fully satisfy every taste requirement.

Fasting superfoods that stand out for their special and delicious taste include nut spreads, such as tahini, peanut butter, almond butter and hazelnut butter.

The tahini, that is, sesame paste is a food of significant nutritional value, with a good protein content, especially if it is combined with foods such as legumes or nuts and beneficial fatty acids, minerals and trace elements. It can be very easily included in the daily diet during fasting, either as a spread to which other ingredients such as honey can be added, as a dressing ingredient in salads with lemon, or as a vegetable dip.

The popular peanut butter it could not be included among the most delicious fasting superfoods, as there are not a few who particularly prefer it in their daily diet. In fact, it is a healthy food full of nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, good fatty acids, calcium, magnesium and many vitamins. It can be included in the daily diet as a healthy spread, but also as an ingredient for cereal bars, cakes, brownies or cookies. At the same time, it can be combined with fruit or yogurt, but also as a dressing ingredient in salads.

It also moves on the same axis almond butter, whose benefits to the body are indisputable. More specifically, it is an important source of protein, calcium, good fats, fiber, folic acid and vitamins. It can be eaten as a snack in combination with some fruit such as an apple or a handful of red fruits. It is easily incorporated into the morning meal by adding a tablespoon of it to yogurt with cereals. Alternatively, it works as a spread or as a dressing ingredient in salads for a creamier texture.

Fasting superfoods also include hazelnut butter, which in addition to its special taste, has an abundance of nutrients such as good fats, fiber, protein, folate, vitamins, phosphorus and potassium. It can be included in the daily diet during fasting either as a spread, or as an ingredient in salads, or as a snack with some fruit.

In addition to nut spreads, fasting superfoods also include certain types of seeds, such as chia seeds and hemp seeds. The chia seeds they provide a significant amount of nutrients with few calories. They are rich in fiber, high quality protein, antioxidants and good fats. They have the property, when in contact with water, to swell creating a thick paste. Their neutral taste makes them an ideal addition to the daily diet, especially during the fasting period, and the possible combinations are truly innumerable. They can be added to yogurt, cereal or oat cream, smoothies, soups as a thickening agent, legumes and salads.

Similar to chia seeds, and shelled hemp seeds they are deservedly included among fasting superfoods as they are an excellent source of protein, which provides all the necessary nutrients to the body. The simplest way to consume them is by adding a few spoonfuls of them to yogurt, oats and cereals or even smoothies.

These fasting superfoods promise to transform the period of fasting into a nutritious and delicious body detoxification experience. However, it is worth noting that especially in the case of nut spreads, due to their increased caloric load, it is important to consume them in moderation.
