Ashwagandha (Ashwaganda) – also known as the Indian cherry of winter, has the botanical name Withania Somnifera. It is cultivated in western India and the Himalayas, mainly in drier areas. Ashwagandha has a bittersweet taste while the sweet taste prevails in digestion. The benefits of Ashwagandha to the body are miraculous. Many call it the Ayurvedic ginseng because of the action it has in enhancing strength and endurance in the body. The various medical properties of ashwagandha are attributed to the many flavonoids it contains. It is used as a medical adaptogen (since it enhances endurance), rejuvenating and sedative. It is applied to cure some important disorders associated with the destruction of nerve tissues, has an anti-oxidative effect, helps a lot in arthritis, anxiety and exhaustion. This herb is a very good food for the mind as it improves mental capacity and contributes to better performance at work. It balances the Vata element (air) in the body which is often responsible for the development of stress and anxiety. It can be used in Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss and insomnia. It helps to have normal sleep and greatly enhances sexual performance. Aswagandha relaxes the body, reduces stress and increases the body’s physical endurance. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has been successfully used in treatment for arthritis. Reduces inflammation in the ligaments and facilitates movements.
