Mate tea is made from the yerba plant (pronounced ‘yehr-bah mah-the,’) a tree native to South America similar to the tea plant. It is not strictly considered “tea” as it does not come from the tea plant, Camelia Sinensis, but has similar benefits to tea, since it has an equally high concentration in antioxidants and contains caffeine.
In South America it is consumed by a hollow pan where the leaves add free, warm water and a metal straw that acts as a colander.
