Star anise has also been used throughout history for its medicinal properties. The spice and plant have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. It helps with indigestion, it promotes perspiration, it helps fight fever and can be used to relieve muscle soreness. Anethole, which is the prominent chemical component present in the spice, copies the hormonal profile of the human body and can thus help as a galactagogue in nursing women.
