Senna is a popular herbal medicine that is often marketed as a laxative, weight loss aid and detoxification method. Extracts and teas made from senna leaves have long been used as laxatives and stimulants in traditional herbal medicine. Today, senna is most often sold as a tea or constipation supplement, but is also occasionally used in weight loss pills and drinks.
The most common application for senna tea is to stimulate bowel movements and relieve constipation. Senna tea slightly irritates cells in the large intestine that stimulates intestinal movement and promotes a laxative effect. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins and tissues in the lower rectum that can cause bleeding, pain and itching.
Chronic constipation is a major cause and short periods of constipation can irritate pre-existing hemorrhoids. So many use senna to relieve these constipation symptoms.
