Nutmeg is a tropical seed, which is cultivated to provide the homonym spice. The spice has a distinctive pungent fragrance and a warm slightly sweet taste.
Nutmeg is used both in savory dishes and desserts. It goes perfectly with mashed potatoes and is commonly used in dishes containing meat, in sauces, soup and baked goods. In some countries it is used on top of vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Nutmeg is also traditionally used in warm apple cider, warm wine and eggnog. In the USA it always added in the filling of sweet pumpkin pie.
