Licorice is a flowering, herbaceous plant that is native to the tropical American climate, western Asia and much of Europe. The dried root is light brown in color and very sweet and aromatic.
Licorice has been extensively used throughout the world and centuries for its various medicinal properties. As a herb, it is very sweet and is packed with various phytochemical compounds and steroids. Licorice can help regulate estrogen levels, by decreasing them if they are elevated or increasing them by stimulating estrogen production. Additionally, it has strong anti-inflammatory properties, especially against gastric ulcers. Licorice has hepatoprotective properties, aiding in the fortification and healing of the liver, it is a mild antiallergenic, a strong expectorant and can soothe bronchial rheum, bronchitis, a sore throat in case of laryngitis. Also, it has calming properties, promoting sleep and relieving stress.
To prepare a licorice brew, either with the cut herb or powder, we add a teaspoon in boiling water and simmer for 5-10’ minutes. We strain the brew and drink.
