Allspice, which is also known as Jamaican pepper, or pimento, is the seed of a tree native to southern Mexico and Central America. The name ‘allspice’ is used for this wonderful spice because of its flavor and taste that resembles a combination of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. Its shape resembles black pepper, although it is more brown and bigger in size.
Allspice is used in many recipes around the world. It goes wonderfully on meat, red sauces, commercial sausage, and it is very often included in curry powders and barbeque sauces. In both USA and Great Britain, allspice is used in cakes and other sweets.
